The Tent Makers of Cairo

On Monday we had John and Joan Fisher visit to talk to us about their work with the Tent Makers of Cairo.

A really interesting talk on the History, design and  methods that these men use to create beautiful and distinctive additions to their homes.

All the pieces are worked onto tent canvas
If they want a different colour background, the a piece of coloured fabric is placed on to of the canvas

The designs are drawn onto the background
and then fabrics is needle turn appliqued onto the drawing

 Lots of designs include Script
 as well as Floral designs
MAny of the designs come from carved woodwork used in decorative doors

They also cater for the Egyptian tourist market

Many of the more modern designs include embroidery too

A great afternoon full of inspiration

A Great Workshop

We had a very successful workshop this month, making a Flex Clasp bag, using these Hexagon shape clasp

Everyone arrived (as requested) with thier fabric cut out so we got straight onto sewing
Ellen's Tartan medication bag
The bag is simple enough to make.
Just a couple of rectangles really

But once the clasp is added it turns into this lovely little secure bag
That snaps shut

Some lovely fabrics selected

This was such a popular workshop that  A Lot more clasps have been ordered!!
